“(Paul)…I have become all things to all men, so that by all possible means I might save some. I do all this for the sake of the gospel that I may share in its blessings.”  I Cor. 9:22-23

Founding & Early History

On August 6,1831, Fincastle Baptist Church was organized. There were 18 members. The first pastor was the Rev. Absalom C. Dempsey, affectionately called “Father Dempsey”. During the first year, services were held in the member’s homes. The first church building was located in downtown Fincastle and was used from 1832 to 1896. Rev. Dempsey served as pastor for 30 years (1831-1861).

In 1896, Fincastle Baptist Church held it's first service in our previous building, which they had built in downtown Fincastle. This building was used until 2005. During that period of time, many different pastors served, and several additions to the building accommodated a growing congregation. In 1929, the bill was paid in full.

From 1896 to 1926, there were 5 pastors. One of them, Rev. H.F. Gilbert, served 10 years and his pastorate was very successful. In the year 1921, 77 new members were baptized, 44 of them in one day (Jan. 30). Sunday School rooms were added during this time and were completed in 1923, with the dedication held in 1929 after the bill was paid in full.

In October 1997, our present pastor, the Rev. Kevin Cummings came. During his time with us, the church has experienced considerable growth numerically and spiritually. In the late 1990s, the church purchased and rented several surrounding buildings to accommodate its ever-growing ministries, as well as began a second worship service for Sunday mornings.

2000 saw us join with several other Southern Baptist churches in our state by aligning ourselves with the Southern Baptist Conservatives of Virginia.

In February 2001, we purchased 20 acres of land on Rt. 220. Incredibly, by October 2001, the church had paid off the debt on the land. In July 2003, our groundbreaking service was held for Phase I.

October 30, 2005 saw us occupy our current facility with an attendance of 671. In the summer of 2006, we sold our previous church facilities. Continual growth led to a vote to begin construction on phase II of our facilities in 2009.

On April 18, 2010, we held a ground breaking service for Phase II, and  on August 21, 2011, we held a grand opening celebration on the completion of Phase II of our building.

2013 and 2014 saw us add multiple staff members to assist the growing ministries of FBC. We also sponsored multiple church plants during these years.

In March 2017, the church leadership announced that Fincastle Baptist Church would launch its first multi-site campus in Covington, VA. There was an average weekly Sunday morning attendance of 800+ people at the time.

On August 20, 2017, we launched Fincastle Baptist Church: Highlands Campus. We are expectant that God will continue to do miraculous things through this church for His glory. We are eager to join Him where He is already working!

On March 18, 2018, we opened the new Worship Center. We also sponsored 90 church planters in Guatemala, eliminated $2.6 Million Dollars of Veteran Medical Debt, Packaged 84,000 meals for the hungry in Haiti, Nicaragua & the Dominican Republic and packed & distributed 500 Blessing Bags to our community. We also had the most ever Baptisms in 1 year during our 187 year history - 81 Baptisms!

In 2019, we built a Pastor's home in Guatemala, saw 68 people Baptized & added 110 new members.
